PFAS Contamination Found in Popular U.S. Beers

Beer lovers may want to think twice before cracking open a cold one. A new study from the American Chemical Society has revealed that many U.S. beers contain levels of “forever chemicals” — also known as PFAS — that exceed what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers safe for drinking water. These synthetic chemicals don’t easily break down and can accumulate in the body, potentially leading to long-term health risks.

According to The Independent, researchers tested 23 beers brewed across the U.S., selecting brands from regions with known PFAS-contaminated water supplies. The results were concerning: 95% of the beers tested contained PFAS such as perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). These chemicals are often used in non-stick cookware, food packaging, pesticides, and cosmetics — and now, apparently, they’re ending up in beer.

While most U.S. breweries do treat their water, typical filtration systems aren’t designed to remove PFAS. Jennifer Hoponick Redmon, lead researcher on the study, stated, “I hope these findings inspire water treatment strategies and policies that help reduce the likelihood of PFAS in future pours.”

Interestingly, the study found that beers from outside the U.S. — including those from Mexico and Holland — were less likely to contain PFAS, indicating that U.S. water quality and regulatory gaps may be partly to blame.
