The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is putting public health and the environment at risk by promoting the use of “sewage sludge,” a byproduct of wastewater treatment, as fertilizer for farms across the country.
This sludge is far from harmless; it’s contaminated with toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS, which can poison our soil, water, and food. Despite the dangers, the EPA continues to Support this practice without requiring any testing for PFAS. This negligence endangers the lives of millions of Americans.
We need your voice to demand that the EPA stop endorsing sewage sludge as fertilizer. Instead, let’s call for a ban on its use and the implementation of regular PFAS testing for all fertilizers!
PFAS chemicals are nearly impossible to break down and have been linked to serious health issues, including cancer, birth defects, and immune system disorders. Alarmingly, the EPA has been aware of this contamination since 2003 when research from 3M highlighted concerning levels of PFAS in sewage sludge. Additionally, EPA scientists have been warning about elevated PFAS levels in wastewater and sludge fertilizer for years.
These harmful chemicals from sewage sludge enter our soil, crops, and groundwater, creating a cycle of contamination that affects the food we eat and the water we drink. PFAS has been found in milk and other crops grown on treated land, and once these chemicals enter the food chain, they can’t be removed.
Even more puzzling is the EPA’s failure to act despite recognizing certain PFAS as hazardous and claiming there’s “no safe level” of exposure. Why hasn’t the agency banned this dangerous practice for fertilizers?
The EPA has a responsibility to safeguard the environment and protect public health. It’s time to hold them accountable!
Sign this petition to demand an immediate ban on the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer and enforce nationwide testing for PFAS in all sludge and farmland! Together, we can make a difference!
