The Goldman Environmental Prize, also known as the Green Nobel Prize, is an annual award that honors grassroots environmental activists from around the world. Established in 1990 by philanthropists Richard N. Goldman and his wife, Rhoda H. Goldman, the prize recognizes individuals who have made significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk. This year’s winners include remarkable activists who took on powerful corporations and won landmark lawsuits, showcasing the power of perseverance and dedication in environmental activism.

One of the 2023 recipients is Diane Wilson, a fourth-generation fisher from the United States. Wilson took on Formosa Plastics, one of the world’s largest petrochemical companies, and won a $50 million settlement to help clean up decades worth of toxic plastic waste on the Texas Gulf coast. The lawsuit is a testament to Wilson’s unwavering commitment and tenacity in the face of adversity, and the victory serves as a source of inspiration for activists around the globe.

Another winner, Chilekwa Mumba, played a significant role in changing UK law after a Supreme Court ruling in London decided that British mining company Vedanta Resources could be tried in the UK court system. Mumba’s efforts helped empower communities and bring hope for justice in the face of environmental exploitation.

The Goldman Environmental Prize also highlights the extraordinary work of Indigenous women from Indonesia and Brazil, who fought against powerful corporations and misogyny to protect vast areas of the world’s largest rainforests. In Brazil, Alessandra Korap Munduruku led community efforts to stop British mining company Anglo American from encroaching on Indigenous lands in the Amazon. Her work has had a far-reaching impact, with other multinationals also backing out of mining projects in Indigenous territories.
