The Portage County Animal Protective League (APL) in Ohio saved over 180 animals from deplorable living conditions on June 26. The rescued animals included a wide variety, such as horses, miniature horses, a donkey, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, tortoises, and numerous birds.
According to the Portage APL, the animals were found in filthy, unsanitary conditions without adequate food or water. Many were malnourished and suffering from injuries and illnesses. Particularly distressing was a calf unable to stand due to severe malnutrition.
Among the many animals in dire need, some were sent to Whispering Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary in Medina County. Founder Janine Smalley described the heartbreaking condition of these animals, noting that recovery would take at least three months for many, and even longer for those in the worst shape. Sadly, some turtles have died since the rescue. The horses and goats, extremely malnourished and dehydrated, had resorted to eating tree bark. Whispering Acres took in four goats, two horses, and two sheep, all of which are now receiving critical care.
The Portage APL emphasized the importance of community Support in this large-scale rescue effort. Executive Director Chalan Lowry expressed gratitude to organizations like Herps Alive, FOCUS Rescue, Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary, Maggie’s Mission, Parrot Hope Rescue, Rescue Village, and Whispering Acres for their assistance.
As the investigation continues, the Portage APL urgently needs donations to Support the ongoing care and rehabilitation of these animals.
