Over a Dozen Animals Rescued from Pennsylvania Home

The Pennsylvania SPCA’s Animal Law Enforcement team, acting on information from the Pennsylvania State Police and Coaldale Borough Police, rescued 15 Great Pyrenees-type dogs, two collie-type dogs, two birds, and a turtle from a property in Coaldale, Schuylkill County on Monday. The intervention followed a tip from a concerned Good Samaritan who reported that the dogs were in poor health.

Upon obtaining a search warrant, PSPCA officers discovered the dogs suffering from severe skin conditions. Many were nearly hairless, their bodies covered in crusted scabs and open wounds, primarily due to sarcoptic mange. The “owner” voluntarily surrendered all the animals, which were then transported to the PSPCA’s Philadelphia headquarters and the Main Line Animal Rescue site for thorough examinations and care.

Julie Klim, CEO of the Pennsylvania SPCA, expressed deep concern in a news release: “The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a Great Pyrenees is their beautiful, fluffy white coats. But the dogs rescued yesterday are a stark contrast; instead of white fur, there was red, itchy, rough, bloody skin. This didn’t happen overnight, and sadly these animals have been suffering for some time. We take solace in the fact that they are safe now, and beginning their journey to learning how pets are meant to be treated.”

The rescued animals are now receiving much-needed medical attention and care, and the investigation into the case of animal cruelty and neglect continues, with charges pending upon its conclusion.
