Contrary to popular belief, sheep don’t naturally need to be sheared. They have been selectively bred so that they continue to produce large amounts of wool even in the hottest of months. Sadly, this practice, combined with cruel shearing methods, has caused immense suffering for sheep, especially during the summer months.
Recently, one sheep that had likely been born on a wool farm was found wandering the Victorian bushland. His matted fleece was coated in dirt, twigs, and insects that he had collected in the wild. He had so much unshorn wool that you could barely even see his face.
Fortunately, the sheep, now named Baarack, was taken in by Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, where he finally got the shearing that he so desperately needed. How much wool was this poor guy lugging around? 35.4 kilos! That’s about 77 pounds, which is almost half the weight of an adult kangaroo!
The workers at Edgar’s Mission think that Baarack probably escaped the wool farm and hadn’t been sheared in five years. He’s a whole new sheep and can now live out his life in peace. He gets to spend the rest of his days in a pasture relaxing, playing, and even listening to the harp with his friends.
