The carnivore diet, which emphasizes consuming only animal-based products like meat, eggs, and dairy, has rapidly gained popularity, especially among fitness enthusiasts. Advocates claim that this high-protein, vegetable-free diet has helped them achieve weight loss and improved overall health. However, medical experts are increasingly concerned about its long-term effects.
Dr. Rupy Aujla, speaking on “The Doctor’s Kitchen” podcast, warned that extreme diets like the carnivore and keto diets might lead to serious health issues. He highlighted research indicating that these diets could be “pro-inflammatory and pro-aging,” potentially causing damage to vital organs such as the heart and kidneys. Aujla explained that these diets might promote the accumulation of senescent cells—cells that are no longer functioning properly and can trigger systemic inflammation and toxicity.
Beyond inflammation, Aujla and other health professionals are worried about the risk of nutritional deficiencies in a diet that excludes vegetables. Additionally, they caution that the carnivore diet might increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, mitochondrial dysfunction, and even dementia due to its potential impact on cholesterol levels and heart health. While Aujla acknowledged that a short-term adoption of the diet could benefit those with specific intolerances, he urged caution, emphasizing the lack of long-term studies on the diet’s effects.
