People locked in solitary confinement across the U.S. are allegedly being left to suffer in brutal, life-threatening heat—trapped alone in tiny, unventilated cells as temperatures soar past 100°F (38°C). One man in Missouri spent half the summer in solitary, with temperatures outside hitting 107°F (42°C). Inside his cell? No air conditioning, no fan, no emergency button—just silence, heat, and isolation.
Many incarcerated individuals report heat stroke and other medical emergencies, with help often arriving late—if at all. Some say they were even punished for calling for help. Civil rights groups like the MacArthur Justice Center are suing, calling these extreme temperatures a form of cruel and unusual punishment. This system disproportionately harms people of color and low-income individuals, many held in ICE detention or U.S. prisons.
Sign the petition now to demand U.S. states end solitary confinement and stop heat-related abuse in prisons.
