Even if you haven’t heard of palm oil, you’ve most likely consumed it and/or used it. Because it’s such a cheap vegetable oil, companies use it in their food, cleaning, and personal care products. Unless you are actively trying to avoid it, palm oil is almost impossible to not use. Sadly, palm oil comes at a large cost to local communities, the environment, and animals.

More and more people are starting to learn about the palm oil industry’s impact on local wildlife, such as orangutans, who are poached and captured to be sold as pets. Greenpeace International has also recently released a report, Burning down the house, revealing that companies who are members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) have sourced their palm oil from producers that are tied to the fires in Indonesia. This industry’s corruption and harmful behavior do not stop here. It also extends to the workers on palm oil plantations.
The palm oil industry has been found guilty of various human rights abuses, including using child labor, ransacking villages, and destroying homes to make room for palm oil plantations. A recent Associated Press investigation documented experiences of sexual assault and rape among many workers. The workers have also recounted being threatened with physical violence and deportation by their bosses.
