Start-Up Tackles Two of the World’s Biggest Challenges: Food Security and Climate Change

Sara Menker is the founder of a start-up with big goals. As the CEO and founder of Gro Intelligence, her company provides tools to help, “two of the biggest challenges we face as humanity: food security and Climate change,” she told TIME.

Menker is a former Morgan Stanley commodities trader turned CEO. Gro Intelligence forecasts and provide data on agriculture sectors. Uncovered data found the industry vulnerable to crises including the coronavirus pandemic and Climate change.

“COVID exposed how fragile our food systems really are,” says Menker in Yahoo! Finance, “How they’re built on very short-term thinking. Most food transactions are still done on a week-to-week, month-to-month, day-to-day basis. So that means that like, something goes wrong, the system breaks.”

Menker points to imbalances in the food system, where supply cannot reach demand. While food prices rose due to demand, hundreds of million people were pushed into poverty by the pandemic.

She continues to warn about global food shortages, now exacerbated by Climate change,  “The question you ask yourself is, one, is demand growing at the pace we expected it to? And the answer is yes. And is supply keeping up with demand? And the answer there is no. Which is why you have prices going up so much right now. And the reason is that supply is now being interrupted a lot more by Climate change. Climate change has become the swing factor. Last year in the U.S. alone, different agriculture-producing regions faced wildfires, droughts, floods and destructive winds all in one season. It’s just completely crazy.”
