Over the past 50 years, Spain has seen a drastic increase in the length of its summer season, which has expanded by an average of 36 days. This change is just one of many signs that the country is shifting towards a desert-like climate, driven by the impacts of global warming.
A new study conducted by researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona highlights how Spain, particularly the mainland and the Balearic Islands, has become a hotspot for Climate change in Europe. Since 1971, temperatures in these regions have risen by 3.27°C—far above the global average. This dramatic warming trend, combined with a reduction in annual rainfall, signals the country’s shift away from its traditional Mediterranean climate towards a more arid, steppe-like environment.
The study warns that by 2050, Spain could experience a 20% decrease in rainfall. This drop in precipitation will further accelerate the transition to a semi-arid or desert climate, as defined by the Köppen climate classification system. As temperatures rise, Spain’s summers are becoming longer, with a significant increase in days where the temperature exceeds 25°C. Heatwaves have also become more frequent and prolonged, leading to longer periods of drought across the country.
Tropical nights, where temperatures stay above 25°C, are another concerning trend. Once rare, these nights are now common, particularly in southern and coastal regions. Meanwhile, although heavy rainfall events have increased, these downpours do little to alleviate the growing water scarcity, often leading to damaging floods instead.
If current greenhouse gas emissions continue, Spain’s climate will undergo a “fundamental change” by 2050, with the colder steppe climate expected to dominate large parts of the country. This shift not only poses risks to the environment but also to agriculture, water supplies, and overall quality of life for residents.
