According to UN Women, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was established in 1994 as the “sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management.”

Some of the most sensitive and threatened ecosystems and populations can be found in dry and desert land. The parties of the UNCCD meet regularly to discuss how to reach their goals and combat desertification.

Women are victimized the most when “land is degraded and usable land becomes scarce” because more women rely on agricultural work and food production to make money. They also have a higher chance of being affected by poverty all while having fewer legal protections. About 80 percent of women employed in the least developed countries consider agriculture their main source of employment. They also make up 43 percent of the agricultural workforce globally.

Desertification will also affect food sources, limit water supplies, and have a detrimental impact on species.
