Four puppies have been saved after enduring weeks of suffering in the Mojave Desert. The puppies were discovered on August 2 by Paws Patrol LV, a Las Vegas-based rescue organization, following a tip from a concerned traveler who spotted them near a gas station outside Baker, California. Local employees had reported seeing the puppies for nearly a month.
The rescue team faced daunting conditions during their five-day search. The puppies, found in a skeletal state, had been surviving by eating rocks due to the extreme lack of food and water. The desert’s harsh climate, with temperatures averaging 90°F during the day and 64°F at night, added to their suffering.
Dogs are particularly vulnerable to heat stress, with many starting to experience discomfort at temperatures above 80-85°F. Proper care in such conditions includes providing shade, water, and a cool resting place. The rescued puppies are now in the care of the Nevada SPCA, where they are receiving the medical attention they need.
Joyce Foreman from Paws Patrol expressed relief at the successful rescue, saying she had been worried about the puppies’ safety, particularly from predators like coyotes. Amy Lee from the Nevada SPCA mentioned that while the exact circumstances of the puppies’ abandonment are not confirmed, they are grateful for the extensive efforts of the Paws Patrol team. Currently, the puppies are under veterinary care and will be available for adoption once they are fully healed, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered.
