Over 50 Puppies Rescued from Puppy-Fattening Farmers in Vietnam

In Thai Nguyen, Vietnam, a significant step towards ending the cruel dog meat trade has been marked by the closure of two puppy-fattening farms. This milestone comes as over 50 puppies were rescued through a collaborative effort between local authorities and Humane Society International (HSI), aiming not only to rescue animals but also to protect public health from the dangers of rabies.

The farms, where puppies were fattened for weeks before slaughter, have long been part of a controversial trade that claims millions of dogs and cats annually across Vietnam. However, amidst growing awareness and governmental Support, the owners of these facilities are now shifting gears. One former owner, Mr. Phạm Dũng, who ran his farm for seven years, expressed relief in leaving the trade behind. His decision to transition to agriculture signifies a personal and community-wide commitment to a healthier, more humane livelihood.

The HSI’s Models for Change initiative has gained traction following Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s directive to bolster rabies prevention efforts. Rabies, often linked to the dog meat trade due to the removal of vaccinated dogs from communities, poses a significant public health risk. By supporting transitions like Mr. Dũng’s and Mr. Trần Lê Hậu’s move towards sustainable agriculture, HSI aims not only to rescue animals but also to safeguard communities from disease outbreaks.

Dr. Katherine Polak of HSI emphasized the critical nature of these transitions, pointing out that the unregulated movement and treatment of dogs in the meat trade undermine efforts to eliminate rabies, a preventable yet deadly disease. Through partnerships with local governments and enforcement agencies, HSI continues to advocate for stricter regulations and public awareness campaigns to discourage dog and cat meat consumption.

The rescued puppies, now under the care of Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, will undergo medical treatment and rehabilitation before being made available for adoption—a hopeful step towards finding loving homes for these animals who narrowly escaped a bleak fate.

The Models for Change program seeks to end animals’ suffering and addresses broader societal issues such as public health and community well-being. By supporting former dog meat trade participants in transitioning to sustainable livelihoods, Vietnam moves closer to a future where compassion prevails over cruelty.

As the program expands its reach across Vietnam, its impact goes beyond animal welfare, fostering a more compassionate community—one where the transition from cruelty to compassion is not just a slogan but a tangible reality for all involved.
