A recent undercover investigation conducted by the animal protection group Lady Freethinker has shed light on the appalling conditions of the cat and dog meat trade in Hanoi, Vietnam. The findings paint a grim picture of animals subjected to extreme suffering and brutality, with stolen companion animals among the victims.

Dogs and cats, some wearing collars indicating they were once beloved pets, were discovered crammed into tiny cages in markets across Hanoi. Trembling with fear and huddling together for comfort, these innocent creatures witnessed their fellow beings being butchered before their very eyes. The scenes captured by the investigator are nothing short of heartbreaking, with dogs visibly shaking as they watched their counterparts slaughtered in front of them.
The methods of killing are as barbaric as they are cruel. Workers, devoid of any compassion, grabbed struggling dogs by the neck with metal tongs, mercilessly striking them over the head with clubs, while others processed the meat on top of the cages of live animals, with blood dripping onto the faces of the terrified creatures. One particularly distressing scene depicts a dog being clubbed repeatedly before being callously discarded into a bin, gasping for breath as it lay dying atop other dogs’ bodies.

The investigation also revealed the presence of cats in this brutal trade, some bearing collars indicating they were likely stolen pets. Others were presumed to be strays or bred specifically for slaughter. This revelation is particularly alarming given the growing concern among Vietnamese citizens, especially the younger generation, for the welfare of these animals. Recent polls indicate that a majority of Vietnamese citizens Support a ban on the consumption of cat and dog meat, rejecting the notion that it is a part of Vietnam’s cultural heritage.

Aside from the inherent cruelty inflicted upon these animals, there are also significant public health concerns associated with the cat and dog meat trade. The recent death of a man involved in the trade highlights the dangers posed by diseases such as rabies, which can easily be transmitted through the consumption of infected meat. Lady Freethinker’s investigator noted that many of the animals appeared sickly, thin, and covered in sores, likely carrying parasitic infections that could further jeopardize human health.
In light of these harrowing findings, Lady Freethinker Founder Nina Jackel has issued a plea to the Vietnamese government to take decisive action to end this inhumane and perilous industry. With South Korea recently implementing a ban on dog meat, there is growing momentum for Vietnam to follow suit, potentially saving millions of dogs and cats from a fate marked by unimaginable suffering and untimely death.
