Six Flags Magic Mountain, an amusement park in Los Angeles, is set to install a solar carport that will be the largest of its kind by a for-profit organization in the US. This project will offset 100% of the park’s energy usage, making it entirely powered by clean energy.
The park is partnering with Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables to construct the 12.37-megawatt (MW) solar carport, which will be built over the main guest parking lot. This structure will produce 20.8 million kilowatt-hours of energy annually, enough to power 2,874 households. In addition, a battery storage system will provide 1.958 MW of power with 7,886.3 kilowatt-hours of capacity that can be deployed daily.
Danielle Fidel, Senior Director of Developer Network at DSD, emphasizes the dual benefits of the solar canopy: “Using their parking lot for solar canopies will not only offset 100% of the park’s energy use, it will also provide the added benefit of shaded parking for customers. A win-win for everyone.”
The solar and storage project at Magic Mountain will offset CO2 emissions equivalent to taking 3,182 cars off the road annually. It will also be the largest single-site commercial renewable energy project in California.
Solar carports offer a practical solution for generating clean energy, providing shade, and shelter. Incorporating battery storage ensures reliability and sustainability. Six Flags already has 30 MW of onsite solar at two of its amusement parks, Discovery Kingdom in Northern California and Great Adventure in New Jersey. The company aims to transition its remaining 24 amusement parks to 100% clean energy as well.
