The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a game-changing initiative to make rooftop solar installations more accessible and enhance Americans’ access to clean energy. The DOE plans to offer solar company Sunnova Energy International up to $3 billion in a partial loan guarantee through its Project Hestia. This move is aimed at expanding distributed energy resources (DERs), including rooftop solar, battery storage, and virtual power plant (VPP)-ready software, for American homeowners.
If finalized, the partial loan guarantee would enable Sunnova to provide loans for clean energy systems to approximately 75,000 to 115,000 homeowners across the United States, including its territories. This project is expected to create over 3,400 American jobs and prevent 7.1 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 25 years. That’s equivalent to removing 1.5 million vehicles from the nation’s roads!
A significant portion of Project Hestia loans, up to 20 percent, will be allocated to homeowners in Puerto Rico. This is particularly important, as the island has faced harsh weather conditions and subsequent power outages in recent years. Sunnova aims to provide disadvantaged individuals and communities with increased access to their services by indirectly and partially guaranteeing the cash flows associated with these consumers’ loans.
Each eligible setup must include Sunnova’s smartphone or personal electronic device-accessible technology. Sunnova CEO William Berger believes the DOE financing will accelerate solar and storage adoption, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and expand the availability of reliable, clean, and affordable energy to communities that benefit most from low-cost energy.
This announcement by the DOE’s Loan Programs Office is part of the broader Biden administration push to make solar and other renewable energy sources more accessible. The administration is working toward making the country’s electric grid carbon-free by 2035.
Now is the time to join the rooftop solar revolution! Support solar energy initiatives in your community and explore the possibility of installing solar panels on your own home. By doing so, you’ll contribute to a cleaner, greener future and help the United States reach its ambitious clean energy goals. Let’s work together to make renewable energy the norm and create a sustainable world for generations to come!
