A recent study conducted by the environmental advocacy group Transport Energy has revealed that slight modifications to the flight paths of just a small fraction of aircraft could halve the warming effects caused by contrails and would cost passengers less than €4 (4.2$) per ticket. Contrails, or condensation trails, form when the hot, humid exhaust from an aircraft’s engines meets the colder upper atmosphere, leading to the creation of ice crystal clouds that can linger and trap heat much as natural cirrus clouds do.

The study highlights that while contrails are a temporary phenomenon, their impact on Global warming is significant and comparable to the effects of CO2 emissions from aviation fuel. It is estimated that merely 3% of all flights are responsible for 80% of the warming effect attributed to contrails. By slightly altering the routes of these flights, particularly those flying at higher latitudes over regions like North America, Europe, and the North Atlantic, the study suggests that the warming effect could be reduced by more than half by 2040.
This warming is more pronounced during evening and night flights when the contrails are more likely to form and persist. According to the authors, the climate benefits of avoiding contrail formation are 15 to 40 times greater than the environmental cost of the additional CO2 emissions that the slight detours would cause.
The economic feasibility of this environmental strategy is also underscored in the research. For instance, adjusting the flight path for a long-haul journey from Paris to New York would cost under €4 per ticket, a small price for a significant reduction in climate impact. This cost would cover not just additional fuel but also the deployment of new technologies like humidity sensors which would aid in contrail prevention.
This innovative approach to reducing aviation’s climate impact will be one of the topics discussed at the upcoming COP29 climate summit, co-hosted by a University of Cambridge institute, where global leaders will converge to discuss sustainable practices and technological advancements in the fight against climate change.
