The series of tornadoes that ripped through the Midwest and the Southeast United States this weekend is just another potential indication of the current climate crisis.

Scientists and meteorologists called the night’s events “historic,” as the series of tornadoes caused an amount of incomparable damage and killed at least 70 people.

Although scientists cannot exactly say that climate change has caused the recent weather events that have occurred this year, it is strongly suspected that Climate change could be causing these extreme weather events. Research has shown an obvious increase in tornadoes over the course of 40 years, specifically in areas already prone to these weather events. It is suspected that the climate crisis has something to do with this increase in dangerous weather.

Because tornadoes are created from specific weather conditions, scientists warn that the rise in greenhouse gas emissions could be causing more severe weather events.

Jennifer Marlon, a climate scientist at the Yale School of Environment, said, “Some really important signatures that suggest that this very well may be linked to Climate change,” and that scientists are “observing changes in the outbreaks, not just the severity of individual outbreaks and tornadoes, but also quiet periods.”
