In a unique fusion of entertainment and education, the popular mobile game PUBG MOBILE has introduced new features designed to depict the potential impacts of Climate change, informed by scientific research. This initiative, part of the “Play for Green” campaign, aims to utilize the platform’s massive reach to educate its audience on Global warming.

Professor Mark Maslin from University College London (UCL) has collaborated with the game developers to create two new maps that project the Earth’s condition by 2124, considering a severe scenario where global temperatures rise by 4°C. These maps visualize intense future climates with drastic changes like prolonged droughts and extreme weather conditions, potentially reaching summer temperatures above 40°C and heatwaves surpassing 50°C. This immersive approach brings to light the harsh realities of a warming planet through the lens of a game environment.
The initiative does not stop at worst-case scenarios. It also explores optimistic outcomes, detailing a world where collective efforts keep Global warming below 1.5°C. Professor Maslin’s contributions extend beyond the game, with a white paper and an educational video that further dissects the consequences of climate change and the actions required to mitigate it.
These efforts are part of the broader Playing for the Planet Alliance’s Green Game Jam, led by the United Nations Environment Program. The annual event encourages game studios to engage their audiences on environmental issues through “green activations.” The 2024 Green Game Jam represents a significant push towards using the cultural influence of gaming to inspire real-world environmental action.
Sam Barrett of the United Nations highlighted the jam’s intent to empower players to make sustainable choices in their daily lives, thus contributing to a global movement for ecological preservation.
This blending of gaming with crucial environmental education underscores the innovative paths organizations can take to address Climate change, making the dire need for sustainability more relatable and actionable for people worldwide.
