Google Cloud has introduced solutions that are designed to form a sustainability platform for companies and governments to set goals, compare publicity and internal data, and visualize and understand how they’re doing with sustainability goals.

Google introduced its new initiatives at its first Sustainability Summit, which brings together top industry change-makers to explore the latest strategies and tools to solve the challenges of Climate change.

Among the new initiatives, Google is announcing a set of tools, including a new version of Google Earth Engine, aimed at customers. This tool was previously only available to scientists and NGOs. This will give companies access to data to build visualizations that can show the impact the company’s raw material usage has on a particular area and the world as a whole.

Rebecca Moore, the Director of Google’s geospatial initiatives, says that this will help companies see their real-time impacts on the environment.

“It combines data from hundreds of satellites and other sources that are continuously streaming into Earth Engine. This data is then combined with massive geospatial cloud computing resources, which enables transformation of this raw data into timely, accurate, high-resolution, decision-relevant insights about the state of the world. This can include forests, water, ecosystems, agriculture and how all of these are changing over time.”

“With the power of Google Cloud, and with the intelligence of the Google Earth Engine, we’re helping companies with responsible management of natural resources while also building sustainable business practices,” she added.

The company also announced a goal to become completely carbon-energy-free by 2030. To track this, they are using the 24/7 carbon-free energy insights program, which the company is making available to customers in a pilot program. Maud Texier, the head of energy development at Google, says that this program is about all companies working together to help move away from carbon energy.

“24/7 is about sparking a movement of organizations that take an interest into grids where they operate. The bigger-picture goal is to decarbonize electricity usage for all and for good. So for the past 10 years, and together with our partners, we’ve collected insights and knowledge about how to progress your business towards a carbon-free energy future,” Texier said.

The company is also launching a dedicated IAM (integrated access model) role for the carbon footprint. This will allow non-Google Cloud users to access and track emissions data.

These are great initiatives by Google, and we hope that companies will use them to help mitigate their role in Climate change and help save the planet!
