At a recent convention of science teachers, a group known as the CO2 Coalition was ejected for distributing comic books promoting the idea that carbon dioxide is good for the planet. The CO2 Coalition is a controversial organization that denies the scientific consensus on Climate change and has received funding from far-right organizations and fossil fuel industry-linked donors.

The comic book, titled “Simon the Solar-Powered Cat,” started off innocently enough but took an unusual turn when a “friendly scientist” claimed that CO2 is a “miracle molecule” that helps plants turn sunlight into food. The CO2 Coalition claims that it distributed about 700 comic books to teachers at the National Science Teaching Association’s (NSTA) convention in Atlanta last month before being removed from the event.

This incident has raised concerns among scientists and education experts about the potential for teachers to spread climate misinformation to their students. The situation highlights the different approaches that states are taking toward climate instruction in public schools. New Jersey now requires students to learn about Climate change in nearly every class, while the Texas Board of Education emphasizes the “positive” effects of fossil fuels in science textbooks.

The vast majority of climate scientists agree that human activity is causing Global warming by emitting massive amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. To avoid catastrophic consequences such as dramatic sea level rise over the next few decades, scientists say that humanity must rapidly reduce these emissions.

The Virginia-based CO2 Coalition’s mission is to inform policymakers and the public about the “important contribution made by carbon dioxide to our lives and the economy.” Despite the waning influence of climate denial groups, the CO2 Coalition persists in spreading its message.

It’s crucial to educate our youth on the realities of Climate change, as it will directly impact their future. As a reader of this sustainability blog, you can help counteract the spread of misinformation by advocating for comprehensive climate education in your local schools. Encourage science teachers to present accurate information on climate change and its impacts on our planet. Together, we can ensure that future generations are equipped with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and contribute to a more sustainable world.
