Ian Urbina and an international team of reporters spent four years investigating severe human rights abuses within the global seafood industry. Sir Paul McCartney sheds light on the immense suffering caused by the fishing industry, highlighting the sentience of fish and the inhumane practices they endure. From suffocation and crushing in trawling nets to the toxic, overcrowded conditions of aquaculture farms, the cruelty is staggering. McCartney warns that if overfishing continues at its current pace, marine scientists predict the oceans could be emptied of fish by 2048.

Greenpeace highlights the destructive practices of the global tuna industry, from overfishing and environmental degradation to labor exploitation. Massive industrial operations deplete fish stocks, harm marine ecosystems, and disrupt coastal communities. Workers often face inhumane conditions, while indiscriminate fishing methods capture unintended species, including sharks and turtles, contributing to wasteful practices like shark finning.

China dominates global fisheries, consuming 36% of global fish production and catching 20% of the world’s annual marine life haul, equivalent to 15.2 million tonnes. While Beijing claims its distant water fishing fleet numbers 2,500 ships, some studies suggest it could reach as many as 17,000 vessels, dwarfing the U.S. fleet of 300. Supported by substantial government subsidies, this massive fleet operates in nearly every ocean, often engaging in illegal activities such as targeting endangered species, falsifying documents, and committing human rights abuses.
These videos are not isolated incidents. They highlight systemic issues that ripple through our oceans and beyond. From destructive practices to the human cost, the fishing industry’s dark side demands urgent attention and action.
