Momoa said at an event in Portugal ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon, “Without a healthy ocean life, our planet as we know would not exist.”

The Hollywood actor famous for his role as DC Comics’ Aquaman was applauded as he spoke on a Portuguese beach. He spoke in front of dozens of youth activists and talked about the problems that the world’s oceans are facing.

“We must seek to right the wrongs we have done against our children and grandchildren, turn the tide on our irresponsible stewardship and build momentum for a future where humanity can once again live in harmony with nature,” said Momoa.

7,000 people are expected to attend the United Nations Ocean Conference which is happening from June 27 to July 1. The event has been postponed since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also spoke at the event and apologized to the young activists for his generation not doing enough to tackle Climate change, save the ocean and protect biodiversity.

“Even today we are moving too slowly…we are still moving in the wrong direction,” Guterres said, also pointing a finger at the fossil fuel industry. “It’s time for these behaviors to be seriously condemned.”

Momoa will become the UN Environment Programme advocate for Life Below Water. To learn more about the United Nations Ocean Conference, check out their website and sign this petition to help protect the oceans and wildlife!
