A seal pup was recently attacked and mauled by a dog at Humber estuary, sparking public outrage and a demand for dogs to be kept on leashes.
The seal pup was rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue and was said to have been in great distress. They had 24 puncture wounds all over their body and was found bloody and exhausted.
The seal, named Puck, was taken to get veterinary care and is now on medications to help their wounds heal.
This was just one of two similar events that had been reported within a few days. Another incident involved an off-leash dog approaching and scaring another seal.
Officials and animal rescuers are urging beachgoers to take more care with their dogs and keep them on leashes. Not only to protect the seals but the dogs as well, as seals may bite reactively out of fear.
They also urged people to leave the seals alone and to not approach them as they may be out of the water to rest or to avoid danger. Seal pups can be separated from their mothers if scared as well.
This is a perfect example of how dog owners need to take responsibility for their pets. Take the precautionary measures and keep them on a leash. It is the only safe and responsible thing to do.
