Many people who adopt animals view them as their best friends, even family, and would do anything to protect them from harm. They would never put their pet through any unnecessary pain and try to always do what is best for their sweet pet. However, some people view animals as toys, accessories, and other types of aesthetic displays rather than beings that live, breathe, and feel things. This leads people to put the appearance of their pet before the needs of that pet, which can lead to unnecessary pain, suffering, and discomfort. This may take the form of such procedures such as declawing, tail docking, and ear cropping.
Tail docking is when someone cuts off a dog’s tail, only leaving a nub. It is done to puppies at only a few days old, when they are still too young to even be able to get anesthesia. Ear cropping involves cutting off part of a dog’s ears while they’re between eight and twelve weeks old. They then tape the ears so that they heal upright. These two procedures have no health benefits and cause the poor animals unnecessary pain for the sake of a desired “look.” The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) even opposes the procedure because it poses unnecessary health risks.

Declawing is a procedure that involves 10 separate amputations of a cat’s last bone and nail in each toe. It’s the equivalent of cutting off fingers at the top knuckles in humans. This procedure causes cats an immense amount of physical pain and mental distress. It may also result in infection. Cat owners who opt to have this procedure do it to prevent their cat(s) from scratching; however, it is an incredibly inhumane procedure and there are so many other humane ways to prevent cats from destroying furniture.
Fortunately, many states and countries have started to realize how cruel these procedures are and ban some or all of them. Twenty-one countries have banned cat declawing and a few places in the US such as New York, Denver, and British Columbia have too. It’s time that all US states follow suit and ban cat declawing as well ear docking and tail cropping!
