There has been worldwide outrage after health workers in China killed the pet dog of a woman who was in quarantine for Covid. The owner’s security camera caught the whole incident, showing the health workers beating the pet dog with what looked like a crowbar.
The Shangrao neighborhood had been labeled a Covid-19 controlled area, which meant that all residents had to leave and quarantine while their homes were sanitized.
The video started to trend on Chinese social media despite the original post being taken down. Chinese residents were outraged.
One individual commented, “Who gave them the right to break into her home and kill her dog?” Another social media user said, “Pets are an owner’s private property, and they cannot be culled without permission! Even if culling is necessary, there needs to be a solid, scientific basis for it!”
This was not the first incident of health workers killing pets, however. Several cats were also killed while their owners were in quarantine. A few tested positive for Covid, while the others were never tested.
No matter the situation, no animals should be senselessly killed, especially not in such a brutal way. Pets are part of someone’s family and no one should have to worry about their pet being cruelly killed while in Covid isolation.
