Fish are one of the animals that often get left out of conversations about animal welfare and rights. Many people assume they don’t feel pain or emotions and treat them as though they aren’t sentient creatures. However, this is far from the truth.
When Lacey was at a local pet store, she noticed a fish that looked extremely sick and unwell. He had been surrendered to the store by his past owner when he was around ten years old, had lesions all over his belly, and seemed to be dying. After leaving the pet store, Lacey couldn’t stop thinking about the fish and decided to come back to adopt him.
Lacey didn’t expect the fish to make it more than a day, but she wanted him to at least have a comfortable end of life. She set up a hospital tank for him, which ended up being effective! The fish, who she named Monstro, began to regain his strength. Under Lacey’s care, Monstro completely changed! Not only did he start swimming around and eating, but he also started to become more orange rather than black. Now, he explores, and interacts with other fish, is so much bigger, and is almost entirely orange!
Fish can feel depressed when their environments are too boring or they don’t have any fish friends to swim with. Fortunately, Monstro was rescued by a kind individual who treated him with love and care. Follow Monstro on Instagram @heretherebesculptures!
