Plastic Pollution has become so severe that hundreds of marine species are facing extinction and the oceans are cluttered with trash. The production and reliance on plastic is mainly to blame for the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean, but it’s also the simple fact that people need to stop littering. At the very least, we can avoid throwing trash directly into the ocean by recycling, composting, or repurposing.
Because there is so much plastic thrown into the ocean, fish often confuse it for food and eat it. This leads to a whole other host of issues because not only are the animals dying from ingesting these dangerous substances, but the humans who eat seafood are also, in turn, consuming plastic.
Environmentalists have come up with a clever solution. On Da Nang City’s My Khe Beach, there is a giant ‘goby fish’ sculpture where people can throw their trash to avoid it going into the ocean. It’s made from bamboo, coconut leaves, and recycled garbage. The Goby (bong in Vietnamese) is a native fish to Vietnamese folklore. Vietnam is ranked the fourth biggest polluter of oceans in the world, according to the video above, so this ‘Goby’ should make quite the difference.
There are also other Goby models around the world. On Malpe Beach, near Udupi on the Arabian Sea in Karnataka, India, there is a similar sculpture called “Yoshi the Fish.”
