Southern California is being hit with a wave of canine flu, and Bay Area experts warn that it is just a matter of time before it spreads even further.
So far, roughly 800 cases have been reported or suspected, and 7 dogs have died of it so far. The virus is highly contagious and can be hard to correctly diagnose.
One family said that they suspected their 10-month-old puppy contracted the virus from a hotel that they had stayed at. The puppy began to have symptoms and was misdiagnosed at the vet, resulting in a very long and scary few days of trying to treat him. The puppy eventually recovered, but the situation clearly scared his owners, which is why they wanted to urge dog owners to get their dogs vaccinated for the virus.
Dogs that are infected can often get a cough, fever, and runny nose. Some don’t show symptoms at all. A dog can remain contagious for 30 days after getting the virus and should be kept away from other dogs for that time period.
