A bar in Australia overlooking the Sydney Opera House has developed a new solution for pesky food-stealing seagulls.
The waterfront bar is now employing trained dogs to keep the seagulls away. There has always been a problem with sneaky seagulls swooping in to pick at someone’s meal, and the restaurant has taken action.
The general manager of the Opera Kitchen has noticed a significant reduction in aerial attacks since the dogs started patrolling. The dogs were enlisted after COVID lockdowns and restrictions to ensure customer satisfaction. They also noted that food replacements, broken glasses, and broken plates have significantly reduced.
The trained dogs and their handlers patrol the promenade in front of the bars and chase the seagulls away. The company that is providing the dogs has 12-13 canines on rotation, such as Australian kelpies and Border Collies.
Chasing birds is something that dogs are already naturally inclined to do, so it’s a win for the dog and a win for the restaurants. After the dogs’ success, the Sydney Opera House has signed them on as patrollers for the foreseeable future.
Diners have said the dogs give a pleasant atmosphere, and they can enjoy their time at the Opera Bar without having to worry about their food being stolen.
