The Animal Recovery Mission is sending out a global plea to end the Deopohkari animal sacrifice festival in Nepal, according to an email release.

Deopohkari is a 900-year annual festival designed to appease an evil goddess that is believed to be responsible for drowning children. The religious festival includes parading a female baby goat through frenzied villagers and then plunging her into the goddesses’ pond where several men fight to kill the goat. This horrific torture usually results in the baby goat being drowned, punched, bitten, and ultimately torn apart.

The Animal Recovery Mission infiltrated these kinds of festivals in 2015, and has since documented the horrific animal cruelty at multiple festivals year-round. The evidence of such horrible acts in the name of religious and ritualistic practices gained much backlash from animal advocates, resulting in this year’s Deopohkari festival being more secretive.

Only slight improvements have been made to how the animals are treated, but it is not enough considering the horror that these animals go through.

Outdated rituals behind horrific animal sacrifices are something that must be stopped. These animals experience horrific and terrifying death every year at the hands of humans.

The Animal Recovery Mission wants to try to spread awareness of these harmful practices while encouraging people to worship in more peaceful and humane ways. To help them End Nepal’s Deopokhari Animal Sacrifice Festival, you can sign their petition here.
