Teen culture on the internet can move fast, but a new trend in Argentina is turning heads for a different reason. In Buenos Aires, groups of teens have started meeting in parks wearing animal masks, moving on all fours, and acting out dog or cat behaviors together. Some leap over obstacles like they are running agility drills. Others climb trees and keep to themselves, like they are trying on a whole new way to be in public.

According to Almudena Calatrava at the Associated Press, these meetups are part of a growing “therian” scene, where people say they identify mentally, spiritually, or psychologically with non human animals. The trend has spread through TikTok and other social media, and it is now big enough that psychologists in Argentina are weighing in.

For some teens, it seems less like a fixed identity and more like play. One teenager described enjoying moments of being a dog, while still living an ordinary daily life. Another said she fits into a branch of the community where dressing up and moving like an animal is mainly for fun, not a deep personal belief. Either way, it is clearly a social outlet, and that matters in a world where many young people feel isolated.

Still, adults are asking if it is harmless or risky. A Buenos Aires psychologist quoted in the report said symbolic identification can be part of expression, but it may become concerning if someone fully assumes an animal role in a way that leads to self harm or harm to others. That is where supportive parenting and early mental health care can make a real difference.

In the meantime, this moment can also be a reminder to treat real wildlife and the broader environment with respect, not as costumes or props. If you want to channel care for the planet, choose empathy, learn about local Conservation, and try a more plant based meal this week.
