A roadside zoo in Ohio is once again under scrutiny after evidence surfaced that it may be continuing illegal animal displays. According to Sara Oliver from PETA, animal advocates say Canton Grand Safari kept exhibiting animals even after federal regulators suspended its license for repeated violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture suspended the facility after complaints detailed unsafe and uncontrolled interactions with young monkeys. Videos showed monkeys climbing on visitors without proper supervision. These encounters can cause serious injuries and raise public health concerns due to diseases that spread between humans and other animals.

Federal inspection reports also revealed troubling conditions. Inspectors found primates able to reach electrical outlets, animals chewing on trash, and enclosures filled with sharp metal and filth. In addition, the facility allegedly bought baboons from an unlicensed dealer, which is illegal. These conditions put both guests and captive wildlife at risk.

Unfortunately, this case reflects a larger pattern across the country. Many roadside zoos use friendly language like sanctuary or rescue, yet operate for profit. Animals are bred, bought, and sold while living in stressful and unnatural settings. This harms individual animals and undermines respect for the environment as a whole.

Real sanctuaries look very different. They prioritize safety and dignity, never allowing hands on encounters or breeding programs. Their focus stays on lifelong care and on protecting local ecosystems. Supporting these models helps the planet and reminds us that compassion for animals connects directly to care for Earth.

Choosing a plant based and vegan lifestyle also plays a role by reducing demand for exploitative animal industries. Every choice matters.

Stand with animals and the planet by avoiding roadside zoos and supporting ethical sanctuaries that put care first.
