A family in Pensacola, Florida is in mourning after a shocking incident that unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning. Don Hayden, along with his wife Ashlee and their three children, had been caring for a cat colony of about 30 cats in their Montclair neighborhood. Tragically, one of their beloved outdoor cats, known affectionately as Little Friend, fell victim to a heart-wrenching act of cruelty. The cat was set on fire and burned alive by a group of juveniles, leaving the Hayden family and the entire community in shock and grief.

The horrifying incident took place at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. Little Friend’s torturous death was caught on a neighbor’s Ring camera, providing undeniable evidence of the appalling act. Don Hayden expressed his hope that those involved in the cat’s killing would be held accountable for their actions. Both the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and Escambia County Animal Control are actively investigating the incident.
The Hayden family’s love for animals is evident in their commitment to caring for the cat colony in their neighborhood. They took over the responsibility after an elderly neighbor, who used to look after them, moved to a nursing home. Little Friend, a 2-year-old cat, held a special place in the hearts of the Hayden family, especially their youngest child. The family’s daily routine involved feeding and nurturing the outdoor felines, making the loss of Little Friend even more devastating.
Don Hayden strongly believes he knows the individuals responsible for Little Friend’s horrific fate. He suspects that between five and seven teenagers were involved, with one of them possibly as young as 11 years old. Disturbingly, these individuals have been allegedly involved in other criminal activities in the neighborhood, including breaking into vacant homes and damaging property. The wave of violence has left the Hayden family feeling unsafe, prompting them to consider relocating to a safer environment.
Despite the tragedy, the Hayden family remains determined to find loving homes for all 30 cats in the colony. Approximately 75 percent of the cats are already spayed and neutered, reflecting their responsible care and commitment to the felines’ welfare. However, the family needs Support to provide food and medical care for these cats, as it can be financially challenging to sustain such a large number of animals.
