Shelter Dog in Greece Has Been Waiting Over Five Years to Find a Forever Home

In a small part of the Greek Peloponnese, a dog named Crazy Nelly has been waiting for over five years to find her forever home. Known for her vocal antics, Nelly “screams” whenever she sees a human, seeking attention and affection. She resides at a shelter operated by Foundation For the Strays—Paws of Greece, where her howls are often the first thing visitors hear. “When I arrive at the shelter, I hear her above everything, and I’m already talking to her because I think she’s speaking too,” says Petra Brouwer, co-founder of the shelter.

Nelly’s journey began in 2018 when she was rescued as a four-month-old puppy in Kyparissia, Greece, after being found injured with bite marks. Giannis, a dedicated rescuer, took her in, but after a brief adoption that ended due to a health issue, Nelly’s life took a turn when she struggled with other female dogs, leading to her move to the shelter in 2022.

Now, Nelly shares a kennel with her best friend, a male dog named Wii. While the two have a strong bond, it’s the human companionship that Nelly truly longs for. Though she’s lovingly referred to as “Crazy Nelly,” Brouwer clarifies that the name is meant affectionately, stemming from her talkative nature. Despite her charming personality, Nelly remains overlooked by potential adopters, often due to a preference for puppies. A recent TikTok video showcasing her personality garnered over 24,000 views and 5,000 likes, highlighting the urgency for someone to give this sweet dog the home she deserves.
