Dead Fish Crisis Hits Tourist Spot in Greece

Authorities in Volos, Greece, are grappling with an environmental crisis as hundreds of thousands of dead fish have inundated the city’s port. The fish, displaced from their freshwater habitats by last year’s catastrophic floods, have created a silvery, foul-smelling blanket across the harbor, alarming both residents and officials.

The floods that hit the Thessaly Plain in 2023 refilled a drained lake, dramatically expanding its size and causing the freshwater fish to be swept toward the Pagasetic Gulf. Unable to survive in the saltwater, the fish perished in massive numbers, leading to the current crisis.

Local authorities, racing against time to prevent the stench from reaching nearby restaurants and hotels, have already removed over 40 tonnes of dead fish. Trawlers have been working nonstop to collect the carcasses, which have stretched across several kilometers of the coastline and deep into the gulf. Volos mayor Achilleas Beos has criticized the government for failing to implement preventative measures, such as placing a protective net at the river’s mouth to stop the fish from entering the sea. The lack of action, he warned, could lead to a broader environmental disaster, threatening other species in the area.

The situation has exacerbated the difficulties faced by local businesses, already reeling from a downturn in tourism due to the floods. The sight and smell of dead fish have driven away the few remaining visitors, with some local business owners reporting losses of up to 80%. As the clean-up continues, local prosecutors have launched an investigation into the handling of the crisis. Meanwhile, the environment ministry has remained silent on the issue, despite growing concerns about the long-term impact on the region.
