Cocoa, a 3-year-old Dalmatian-pointer mix, has finally bid farewell to the shelter life she knew so well in Florida. For nearly two years, Cocoa called Abandoned Pet Rescue (APR) in Fort Lauderdale her home, where she was lovingly cared for by staff and volunteers. But now, thanks to the dedication of those who worked tirelessly to find her a forever family, Cocoa is starting a new chapter in her life.
Arriving at APR in June 2022, Cocoa immediately stood out with her faded spots and one distinct black, heart-shaped mark on her coat. But what truly set her apart was her deafness, which presented challenges in her interactions and adjustment to shelter life. Despite her initial struggles with anxiety, Cocoa’s unique personality shone through, captivating the hearts of those who crossed her path.
Recognizing Cocoa’s special needs, APR’s staff and volunteers spared no effort to help her thrive. With the guidance of a pet trainer, Cocoa learned sign language and adapted to life like any other dog. Her progress was remarkable, transforming her into a playful, affectionate companion who adores giving kisses and going for walks.
After months of patience and dedication, Cocoa’s moment arrived when Jamie and Randy Starr came across her story. Drawn to her sweet eyes and inspiring resilience, the Starrs knew they had found their newest family member. Cocoa’s days of waiting were officially over.
Cocoa’s adoption marks a milestone for all involved, but it’s also a reminder of the countless other dogs still awaiting their chance at a loving home. Kara Starzyk, shelter manager at APR, emphasizes the importance of continued Support for animals like Cocoa, urging people to consider adoption and volunteering to make a difference in their lives.
