Juan Fernández fur seals, once thought extinct, have been found to thrive despite being exposed to large amounts of toxic heavy metals. These mysterious creatures inhabit the remote Juan Fernández Archipelago in a protected national park off the Chilean coast. A recent study published in Royal Society Open Science found alarming cadmium and mercury concentrations in fur seal feces, among the highest reported for any mammal.
The archipelago lies on the edge of the South Pacific subtropical gyre, a massive rotating current that has accumulated an enormous plastic patch larger than India. Juan Fernández, fur seal mothers, must travel through this plastic cloud to hunt nutrient-rich prey for their pups. Plastic debris can absorb toxins like cadmium, raising concerns about the fur seals’ food chain.
Phytoplankton in the gyre have evolved to use cadmium in their metabolism due to low zinc concentrations. Zooplankton consume these cadmium-contaminated algae, which fish and larger animals then eat. Eventually, cadmium-rich prey like octopuses and squids end up in the fur seals’ diet. This evolutionary adaptation by phytoplankton may have increased the risk of cadmium exposure for animals higher up the food chain.
Despite high cadmium levels in their bones, Juan Fernández fur seals seem healthy and unaffected by the heavy metal’s toxic effects. This suggests the species may have adapted to withstand cadmium exposure for thousands of years. Understanding this resilience may offer valuable insights for dealing with Pollution in even the most remote environments.
As we learn from these incredible fur seals, let’s use their example to inspire our resilience in the face of environmental challenges. It’s time to take action against Pollution and protect our planet’s precious ecosystems. By reducing our use of plastics, supporting clean-up efforts, and raising awareness, we can make a difference for countless species that call Earth home. Together, let’s work towards a cleaner, healthier world for all living beings.
