A staggering 50% of domestic violence (DV) survivors are reluctant to seek shelter if it means leaving their pets behind. Recognizing the vital role pets play in the lives of survivors, RedRover, a national animal welfare nonprofit, has taken strides to ensure that no one has to choose between their safety and their beloved pets.
With the Support of Purina and PetSmart Charities, RedRover recently awarded over $414,000 in Safe Housing grants to nine DV shelters across the United States. These grants will be used to create or expand pet housing programs, allowing survivors to bring their pets with them as they seek refuge. This initiative is critical, as 91% of survivors report that their pets provide essential emotional Support and physical protection during their healing process.
Currently, only about 19% of DV shelters nationwide are equipped to accommodate pets. The Safe Housing grants, which offer up to $60,000 per shelter, are designed to change that. Funds can be used to build or renovate spaces for pets, establish foster programs, or cover costs related to veterinary care and pet supplies.
Among the recent grantees are shelters in Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, Indiana, Minnesota, and Washington. These shelters are using the funds to enhance their facilities with pet-friendly features such as outdoor play yards, indoor play areas, and dedicated pet enclosures.
The impact of these grants is profound. For instance, Tubman, a shelter in Minnesota, is creating Harriet’s Haven for Pets, a new space where survivors can find safety alongside their pets. Similarly, LifeWire in Washington will use their grant to provide essential care for survivors’ pets and assist with pet deposits for hotel stays.
RedRover’s commitment to this cause is further bolstered by their 25 by 2025 campaign, launched with Greater Good Charities and PetSmart Charities, also with Purina’s Support, aiming to make 25% of DV shelters pet-friendly by 2025. In addition, their partnership with KONG Toys ensures that all Safe Housing grantees will receive dog and cat toys in 2024, enhancing the comfort and well-being of pets in these shelters.
For those looking to apply for a Safe Housing grant, deadlines fall on March 1, June 1, and September 1.
