Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Istanbul on Sunday to voice their opposition to a controversial new law that they fear will lead to the mass killing of stray dogs across Turkey. The legislation, approved last month, aims to remove millions of stray dogs from the streets, citing public safety concerns. However, animal lovers are alarmed, believing the law could result in widespread culling or overcrowded, disease-ridden shelters.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended the law as a necessary measure to address what he calls the country’s “stray dog problem.” Despite this, Sunday’s protesters carried signs with slogans like “Shelters are death camps” and “Withdraw the bloody law,” demanding its immediate repeal.
Among the protesters was 64-year-old Hasan Kizilyatak, who urged the government to retract the legislation. Even supporters of Erdogan, like 55-year-old Ayten Arslan, joined the protest, criticizing the law despite their political alignment with the president. “I say as an AK Party supporter, this law is a bloody law,” she stated.
The main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party, has already challenged the law in the Constitutional Court, seeking its repeal. The government’s estimates suggest that around 4 million stray dogs roam Turkey’s urban and rural areas. While most are harmless, there have been incidents where people, including children, have been attacked. A report by the Safe Streets and Defense of the Right to Life Association claims that 65 people have died from stray dog attacks since 2022.
The legislation mandates that municipalities capture stray dogs, vaccinate, neuter, and spay them before making them available for adoption. Dogs that are terminally ill or pose a threat to human health will be euthanized. However, critics question whether financially strained municipalities will have the resources to build and maintain the required shelters, raising concerns that some may resort to killing the animals instead.
