California’s Illegal Bioengineered Mice Lab Raises Alarming Concerns Over Public Safety

A startling discovery of an illegal bioengineering lab in California has raised significant concerns among officials due to the presence of infectious diseases and poorly stored tissue samples. Located in Reedley, the lab contained nearly 1,000 genetically engineered mice and an array of hazardous materials, including infectious agents such as HIV and Hepatitis.

Reedley City Manager Nicole Zieba expressed her disbelief, stating, “I’ve been in government for 25 years. I’ve never seen anything like this.” The makeshift lab was equipped with approximately 30 refrigerators and freezers, some of which were non-operational, along with incubators, medical testing supplies, and hundreds of bioengineered mice.

Disturbingly, tissue samples from the lab were tested and found to contain highly infectious diseases, including HIV, Hepatitis, herpes, coronavirus, E. Coli, and malaria. The potential ramifications of these discoveries are dire and underscore the importance of immediate action.

The company operating the illegal lab, Prestige Biotech, came under scrutiny when Wang Zhaolin, a representative of the company, disclosed that the mice within the warehouse had been genetically engineered to carry and transmit the COVID-19 virus. This revelation raised the stakes significantly, considering the ongoing global pandemic and the potential risk of exposing these dangerous mice to the public.

The illicit warehouse first came under investigation in March after a local code enforcement officer noticed a garden hose attached to the building’s back wall. Subsequently, a search was conducted, revealing a disturbing array of medical devices that appeared to have been produced on-site, including COVID-19 and pregnancy tests, as reported by NBC News.

As authorities delved deeper into the investigation, they discovered rooms filled with various vessels of liquid, unmarked vials of fluids and suspected biological materials, as well as blood and tissue samples. The magnitude of hazardous materials found on the premises was alarming, with almost 800 mice euthanized by officials due to the potential risk they posed. An additional approximately 175 mice were found dead when discovered.

The extent of the potential public health and environmental risks posed by the illegal lab is enormous. The mishandling of infectious agents, improper storage of tissue samples, and the genetic engineering of mice to carry COVID-19 raise serious questions about the intentions behind such activities. The unauthorized and unregulated experimentation with dangerous substances and bioengineered organisms poses a severe threat to both human and ecological well-being.

In response to the urgent situation, all biohazard materials within the lab were destroyed by July 7, 2023. However, the investigation into the origins and activities of the illicit lab is ongoing.
