A bipartisan bill has been introduced to try to place retired government laboratory testing animals into forever homes or animal rescues.
The bill, The Animal Freedom from Testing, Experimentation, and Research, or “AFTER” Act was introduced by lawmakers and will attempt or relocate and home animals who have been used in laboratory testing. These animals would be relocated to private residences, sanctuaries, or animal rescues.
Senator Gary Peters, who was a part of the introduction of the bill, says that the bill would “encourage federal agencies to collaborate with shelters, rescue organizations and sanctuaries to help provide these animals with safe and caring environments.”
Senator Susan Collins, who also helped introduce the bill, said that the bill is meant to direct “federal agencies to facilitate and encourage the retirement of animals to help ensure they are placed in loving homes or sanctuaries.”
Under the bill. each government agency involved would be able to create its own policies as they try to retire these animals instead of killing them. The federal agencies would be urged to work with non-profit organizations to get animals into shelters and safe places around the country.
