Reports claim that Marineland Canada has allegedly threatened to euthanize its 30 remaining beluga whales after the government blocked its plan to export them to a marine park in China. These highly intelligent and social beings deserve freedom and care — not to be used as bargaining chips.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) was right to deny the export request, which would have condemned these whales to another lifetime of confinement and exploitation. But Canada’s 2019 Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act left a gap: it bans new captivity and breeding, but doesn’t ensure safe futures for animals already trapped.
Canada must act now to build ocean sanctuaries for retired cetaceans and ban the euthanasia of captive wildlife for financial convenience. These whales have suffered long enough.
