Otters are being allegedly trafficked and exploited in Japan’s booming “otter cafes” — where small-clawed otters are caged, distressed, and treated like selfie props. These animals, classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, are suffering in silence while tourists unknowingly fund their misery. Many of these otters were likely stolen from the wild and smuggled into the country — a hidden wildlife crime masked as entertainment.
Despite good intentions, cafe owners and visitors may believe they’re helping Conservation. In truth, captive otters show signs of extreme stress, obesity, self-harm, and even vomiting. These are intelligent, social animals who belong in the wild, not in cafés.
Japan’s Ministry of the Environment must act now. We need a nationwide education campaign to expose the truth and end this cruel trend. Don’t let these creatures vanish for the sake of photos. Sign the petition now. Speak out for otters. Sign now.
