A female mountain lion was found shot dead near Gunnison City Mountain Park, outside Colorado’s legal hunting season. Authorities say she was killed by a gunshot to the chest and left in the bushes. This appears to be illegal poaching, not a lawful act of self defense, which must be immediately reported under state rules. Someone allegedly broke the law and a wild animal paid the price.
What makes this case even more serious is that the mountain lion was part of a Colorado Parks and Wildlife Conservation study tracking mountain lion density in the Gunnison Basin. Research like this helps protect ecosystems and guide responsible wildlife management. Losing one of the few collared animals undermines Conservation efforts and puts more animals at risk. Poaching is not just cruel, it threatens science, biodiversity, and the balance of nature. Colorado Parks and Wildlife must fully investigate who killed this mountain lion and hold them accountable. Sign the petition now to demand answers, protect wildlife, and send a clear message that poaching will not be tolerated. Sign the petition now.
