Petition: Colombia Protects 100% of the Amazon and Others Must Follow

Colombia has set a powerful global precedent by voting to protect 100 percent of the Amazon rainforest within its borders. Announced at COP30, the decision blocks new oil, gas, and large scale mining projects across the entire region. Colombia represents just 7 percent of the Amazon, yet it chose full protection, proving that environmental leadership is possible even under economic pressure.

By declaring its Amazon a Renewable Natural Resources Reserve, Colombia has safeguarded more than 483,000 square kilometers of rainforest. This ecosystem stores vast amounts of carbon, regulates rainfall across South America, and supports Indigenous communities alongside nearly 10 percent of the world’s known plant species. The Amazon functions as one living system, and damage in one country affects them all.
