PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has exposed egregious animal welfare violations at the Mid Ohio Alternative Animal and Bird Sale hosted at the Mt. Hope Auction in Saginaw Township, Michigan. PETA’s undercover investigators have unearthed distressing evidence of animals being sold in appalling conditions, suffering from severe injuries and illnesses, and being subjected to inhumane treatment.
One of the individuals implicated in this exposé is Jeremiah Tietz, a local animal dealer known for his participation in the auction. Tietz was found attempting to sell a fox, which had managed to escape and run around the auction ring before being recovered. The animals he intended to sell also included otters, marmosets, and African wildcats.
PETA’s investigators documented the distressing conditions in which these animals were being sold. Some animals had sustained broken legs and open wounds, while others were emaciated, pacing frantically, and exhibiting signs of severe stress. Many animals were caged without access to water and were kept in overcrowded and inadequate enclosures, some of which were so small that the animals couldn’t stand upright or turn around.
The Mt. Hope Auction has a long and concerning history of Animal Welfare Act (AWA) violations, having been cited 36 times for violations, including 19 repeat citations, since September 2022. The auction has been particularly problematic when it comes to the treatment of foxes. Violations have included failing to prevent dangerous public contact with the animals, signs of stress among the foxes, and inadequate provisions for proper ventilation and space for the animals. Furthermore, the auction has repeatedly failed to meet the AWA’s standards for keeping squirrel monkeys, exposing these animals to unsafe and inadequate enclosures that not only jeopardize their well-being but also pose a threat to the public.
In response to this disturbing exposé, PETA has taken a stand. On October 5, the organization submitted a formal complaint to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), urging an investigation into the Mt. Hope Auction. PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Welfare, Debbie Metzler, stated, “This auction is a nightmare for the thousands of animals who are sold like pieces of old furniture to people who likely don’t have the resources, knowledge, or desire to care for them properly.” Metzler also urged the public to refrain from purchasing animals from breeders and to be conscious of the conditions under which animals are sold.
The distressing revelations brought to light by PETA’s exposé at the Mt. Hope Auction in Saginaw Township, Michigan, are a reminder of the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect animals from suffering. The U.S. Department of Agriculture must take the necessary steps to ensure that the repeated violations at this auction are thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action is taken to safeguard the welfare of animals.
