Visitors to a zoo in China were shocked and outraged after discovering that the “pandas” they had come to see were actually painted dogs. The scandal unfolded at Shanwei Zoo, where guests realized something was amiss when one of the supposed pandas began panting and barking. Video footage taken by a visitor captured one of the dogs, painted to resemble a panda, clearly panting while lying on a rock inside a fenced area. Another dog, with a long curly tail, was also seen strolling nearby.
Initially, the zoo attempted to defend its actions, claiming the animals were a rare breed of “panda dogs.” However, they later admitted the truth: the “pandas” were chow chows, a popular dog breed in northern China, dyed to look like the iconic black-and-white bears. Visitors, understandably upset by the deception, demanded refunds after the truth came to light.
This isn’t the first time a Chinese zoo has been caught in a similar situation. In May, the Taizhou Zoo in Jiangsu Province faced backlash for a similar stunt when they dyed chow chows to mimic pandas. When questioned about the decision, a zoo representative admitted there were no real pandas at the zoo, and the fake pandas were an attempt to satisfy visitors.
