A San Diego judge has allowed a lawsuit to continue against the San Diego Padres, aiming to stop rodeo events at Petco Park on grounds of animal cruelty. The Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL) brought the lawsuit after opposing the Padres’ first-ever rodeo in January. While the Padres attempted to have the case dismissed, Judge Joel Wohlfeil rejected that motion, paving the way for a November 2025 trial.
Despite the upcoming trial, which is expected to span three days, the scheduled rodeo for January 2025 will proceed as planned. The APRL and Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) argue the rodeo violates San Diego’s municipal code prohibiting non-service animals at the stadium. In response, Padres’ attorney, Elaine Harwell, countered that the code is intended to regulate patrons’ actions rather than restrict event types. “The statute is meant to apply to the conduct and regulate the conduct of the patrons attending the events at Petco Park, not to govern what type of events or what type of entertainment is occurring at the ballpark,” said Harwell.
The January rodeo stirred controversy, particularly after a 6-year-old racehorse named Waco Kid collided with a barricade and required emergency medical care. Although C5 Rodeo, the company managing the event, reported that the horse did not suffer major injuries, the incident intensified scrutiny over animal welfare concerns at rodeo events.
